SIR KENNETH MAXWELL STODDART
Great-great grandson of Benjamin, great-nephew of Sir William
Benjamin Bowring and son of Wilfred Bowring Stoddart who, in
1906, together with Sir Robert Hampson, Mr Harrison Jones,
the Town Clerk and the City Surveyor, were nominated by the
then Alderman W.B. Bowring 'to be associated with me in considering
the best manner in which the property may be dealt with'. (Letter
to the town Clerk, 12 January 1906).
Alderman W.B. Stoddart later opened the Old English Gardens
in Bowring Park on 14 July, 1921. His son, Sir Kenneth Stoddart,
is the latest in the long line of this illustrious family to
serve the City and Merseyside with dignity and honour.
Formerly High Sheriff of Lancashire, in 1979-89 Sir Kenneth
was Lord Lieutennant of Merseyside and remains a Deputy Lord
Lieutenant. He was honoured by The Queen who con–ferred
the Knight Commander of the Victorian Order upon him in 1990.
The Society of 'FRIENDS OF BOWRING PARK' has been honoured
by Sir Kenneth's support as Patron of its annual CELEBRATION
COM–MUNITY GALA, first held on 29 June 1991 to commemo–rate
the 85th anniversary of William's gift. He has given great
support and encouragement to the Society' s endeav–ours
to preserve and restore Bowring Park.
