WINTER BULLETIN 2011
‘Give me work till my life shall end, and life till my work is done‘
Friends of Bowring Park can always offer work to willing volunteers - WE NEED YOU !!
HERITAGE FAYRE 10th/11th September was such an event. Frances worked hard scanning pictures and documents for display in archival heritage exhibition, using new display boards funded by Awards for All. Do and friend did lots of baking, Pat and Ron prepared the coach house, Audrey went to STAPLES for quantities of Heritage Data, History, Summer School, and Freedom of The City pics. Dot Ashton did the flower arranging purchases and demonstration, Andrew Johnson sold raffle tickets for the floral displays, Joan Cahill helped Pat on bric a brac and book stall and Audrey Travis did Spin the Wheel. I have to tell you that your work is not done yet, so keep going !!
Graham Bee and his family brought the 1914 trophy won by his Great Grandad, Adrian and Mrs McGillion from Mack Trading attended (unrecognised) between 1.30pm and 2.30pm. The company
funded the two attractions, Fred’s Dray ride, and the Pole Turner. Net proceeds: Fayre £208.50.
However, attendance was poor, especially Sunday, the lowest we have ever experienced, so very special thanks to those people who did come along. Mrs McGillion has since given premature birth to a baby son, who is now thankfully making good progress. Our very best wishes to all the family.
Sunday 11th September marked the 10th anniversary of the New York atrocity and Audrey Wilson recalled the 297 staff and 60 visitors at Marsh & McLennon (formerly Bowring) who lost their lives when one plane made a direct hit on their offices. Some visitors were from the Liverpool office.
GOLF BREAKFASTS: Pat, Ron and Do are approaching the last of their Saturday shifts to do breakfasts for Grange Society who are always welcome. Do also organised food for ‘King of The Hill’ booking on 23 September. A few visiting Clubs also made ad hoc visits for refreshments.
The golf shop telephone was temporarily disconnected recently so AW was ad hoc booking clerk!
BPVC TEAS – Audrey is back on form, and spent ten days opening from 8am to 5pm to assess demand. Sundays and Fridays were the busiest, other days fairly quiet, though some very interesting visitors who signed the Visitors Book to recall their personal reminiscences of their youth in Bowring Park. Former trainee greenkeeper, Derek, was here to be interviewed by The Princes Trust, and former joiner Mick, was here to remember working here with his twin brother. They were employed by the builder who did the coach house refurbishment. Group bookings by societies and family parties always welcomed. Sandra from Aaron Lodge is organising a visit.
Awards for All: final purchases: 2 steel cupboards for archives, a laptop & software, 2 cordless telephones. Also on order:signage and bookbinding work for archival purposes. Total spent £9,750
