 LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PARK

  • Long before Bowring Park ever existed, our home was known as the Roby Hall Estate. Purchased and re-designed by John Williamson (the then Mayor of Liverpool) in 1761, he designed the grounds in the style you see them today.

    The Walled Garden was originally used as a ‘Kitchen Garden’ to provide food and herbs.

    The Dell (or the sunken garden) can be found next to the Walled Garden. It was originally a pond which was used to help with drainage and as a water source for the Walled Garden.

    As drainage improved, the pond was no longer needed and it was transformed into a sunken garden.

  • The Roby Hall Estate was bought by Alderman Sir William Bowring and gifted to the city of Liverpool “for the use of inhabitants of Liverpool for all time.”

    The Estate was officially handed over to the city on the 12th of June 1907 where It was subsequently renamed Bowring Park.

  • Bowring Park officially unveiled a brand new 9-hole course, making it the oldest municipal golf course in England.

    It was only in 1934 that the course was extended to the full 18.

  • The ‘Sir William Bowring Challenge Cup’ was founded with E.L. Coleman becoming Bowring Park’s first ever golf champion.

  • Bowring Park Golf Course was closed during both World Wars where it was used for food production as well as housing the public to avoid bombings.

    It wasn’t until 1956 that the golf course returned to public use.

  • Expansion of the M62 in the 1970’s massively changed the look of Bowring Park. The course was bisected by the motorway which meant the course was cut back down to a 9-hole.

    This didn’t last long however, as land south of the motorway was bought in the 1980’s to extend the course back to the full 18 which you play on today.

  • The Friends of Bowring Park were formed to protect and improve the park for benefit of the local community.

    They have run a number of community projects, raised funds for redevelopment works and repairs as well as managing many local events.

  • Bowring Park Ladies Golf Club was formed after the club relocated following the closure of St Michael’s Golf Club.

Oneday Ltd have been appointed as the Managing Agent of Bowring Park, with the aim of making Bowring a key part of the local community.

You may have seen some improvements at the park already and there’s a lot more to come! With a brand new cafe, courtyard and a playground already added to the park, we’re creating a brand new Bowring.
